Octopus in the Operation Theatre

Octopus is a device used by the cardiac surgeons during an ‘Off Pump’ Bypass operation to hold a small part of the heart stable while the graft

Octopusis being attached. It has suckers, which stick to the heart (like an octopus) and hold it still without damaging it.

Minimally Invasive Surgery:

Sometimes, off pump bypass is combined with minimally invasive harvesting of conduits for bypass. Leg vein can be harvested with one or more incisions of 3 cm. Similarly, the artery in the arm is harvested by two 3 cm incisions. This leads to good healing, quicker recovery, less pain and smaller scars.
