How is angina diagnosed?

Sometimes a history of symptoms alone may clinch the diagnosis. Physical examination may reveal nothing. A resting Electrocardiogram ( ECG ) may show changes of Angina or be entirely normal. But a stress test ( ECG while walking on a treadmill, also called Treadmill test of TMT ) increases the heart’s blood demand and the ECG taken at that time definitely shows signs of Angina.

Rarely, Angina may not be diagnosed even by history, symptoms, physical examination, ECG and stress Test. In such cases a ‘ Dobutamine stress Echo ‘ or a Thallium scan is conducted. Both these test reveal precisely where the heart muscle lacks blood supply, if there is lack of blood supply to the heart.
