Mountain gorillas are one of the world’s most recognisable animals, but recognition must never become complacency. They remain Endangered, with just over 1,000 individuals living in the wild across two populations: the Virunga Massif and the Bwindi-Sarambwe landscape.

Their range is extraordinarily restricted, spanning parts of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. That small geography makes every protected forest, every careful visitor and every conservation decision matter.

The mountain gorilla recovery is a remarkable conservation achievement. Responsible tourism contributes when visitors keep their distance, remain quiet, follow park rules and never trek when unwell. These small disciplines help protect both wildlife and the communities and field teams that make conservation possible.

To encounter a gorilla in the forest is a privilege.
